You want your site indexed at search engine’s first page? Of course you can, and it is not a hard thing to do if you want to put some effort on it. Following is a list you can use if you want to grab a higher position in SERP (Search Engine Result Position). Domain and File Names

Choose a domain that fit with your keyword. Try to find domain with the keyword included. For example, if you have keyword “swimming pool” then you can pick a domain like “swimming-pool”, “freshswimming”, “familyswimmingpoll”, etc. Find between tld, .com, .net, .info.

The second thing is file names, use as much as possible your web page file names written using your keyword. Like this page using “seo-technique” as its filenames.

PS: I don’t use a keyword base domain in this web site, just because this web site now is following an International SEO Competition held by Busby Web Solutions, Australia with the keyword “Busby SEO Challenge”. The usage of keyword in domain names is one of their restrictions.

Keyword Phrases

Find keywords which describe your product generally. What i mean here is, get your research, what actually people will type as the keyword when they come to search engine and looking for a product you have. You can use tools available freely in the internet like Overture, or Google Adwords Keyword Suggestions.

Enrich your keyword with its synonyms.

Put your keyword in your web page title tag. Like this: <title>Busby SEO Challenge</title>

Put your keyword in heading1 tag <h1> and place it at the beginning of your web page. Also put your keyword synonyms using another heading tag <h2>, <h3>, <h4>, and use it as your article’s sub title. Like this: <h1>Busby SEO Challenge</h1>, <h2>Busby SEO Competition</h2>, <h3>SEO World Cup</h3>.

Make sure you have appropiate anchor text when you put a link at another pages. Like from the sitemap page; <a href=”http://www.cebhonk.com/” title=”Busby SEO Challenge”>Busby SEO Challenge</a>

Keyword Density

Keyword density is one of major factor in search engine optimization. But be careful, don’t have it too crowded in a web page. A page with high density of keyword can be suspected as keyword spamming, and this can make your web page blacklisted by search engine.

Bad Techniques

Shortcut is always interesting. But remember, if you get caught, search engine will blacklist your site. Some of bad techniques are; cloaking, invisible text, tiny text, identical page, doorway pages, refresh tags, link farm, filling comment with a lot of keywords, keyword in author tag.

Title and Meta Description Tag

The title you use must have your keyword in it, for your main page and also for other pages. Because when your page get indexed, title is the first thing your visitor to be will read in search engine.

For the description, you may use your one or two first sentence of your article. Use following format: <meta name=”title” content=”Busby SEO Challenge” /> as your meta title, and
<meta name=”description” content=”One of Busby SEO Challenge participant from Indonesia” /> as your meta description.

Meta Keyword Tag

Actually, meta keyword tag is no longer have a good interest for the crawler, even there is some opinion telling that google’s crawler is no longer reading this meta, but there is nothing wrong if you put this meta in your pages. Use like this: <meta name="keywords" content="Busby SEO Challenge, SEO Competition, SEO" />. Choose a different meta content for each of pages.

Author and Robots Tag

Fill author tag with the company who owned the site. This tag will help you ranked better for your company name. Like this: <meta name=”author” content=”cebhonk” />
Use a generic robots tag for all your pages you desired to get indexed. This tag will instruct the crawler to index the pages you want. Like this: <meta name=”robots” content=”index,follow” />

Quality Content

High quality content will make your visitor comfortable when visiting you page, and maybe they will put your link in their bookmark. In this circumstance, be likely they will recommend your site to their friends. Remember, repeating visitor is more valuable than a new one.

Quantity Content

Much more contents is better, but keep in mind, you not only need many contents but also quality content.

Changing Content

You can do this manually or automatically using php. Search engine loves an active web site.

Dynamic URLs

Is your web site using php, asp or other server side script? Avoid using symbols in your URL. However, static content is better than dynamic content, but if you must use dynamic content, make sure there is no symbols being used in your URL.

Frame

Avoid frame. Almost all major search engines can’t follow page inside a frame. Make sure this is the last method you will use in your page.

Sitemap

The best menu in a web site is its sitemap. Sitemap has list of all pages in a web site, including the link.

Site Themes

Choose a topics/theme for your website. Authoring many themes in a web site will produce a lower rank in search engine.

Site Design

Maybe you already think, what the relationship between SEO and site design is. Isn’t crawler cannot read design? You create a web page for human, not for crawler. You must keep this in mind. The optimization procedure you already done, will mean nothing when your visitor come to visit and confused. You can use W3C Link Checker to make sure your web site not contain a broken link. Also use W3C Markup Validate Service to make sure your pages has a valid HTML or XHTML codes.

Separate Content and Presentation

Use Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) to beautify your pages. Do not include layout codes in your html. This will reduce your HTML size up to 50%.

Robots.txt

Even this file is not mandatory, but keep it exist in your web site’s root folder. Make sure search engine not detect 404 errors when search for it. Write down the following 2 lines and save it as robots.txt in your web site’s root folder.
